New
cutting horse event Competing in an
inaugural cutting horse event for women only at Moss Vale, NSW, in April
will be 35 women from three states. A total of 41
entries have been received in the women’s Cutting for Cancer equine
show, with some of the 35 women riding two or three horses each. It will be the
first official cutting horse event for women only in Australia since the
early 1980s. The event will aid
raising funds for the McGrath Foundation. Competitors in the
inaugural event will include top riders like Donna Murphy, of Tamworth,
whose life-time earnings from cutting horse events in the National
Cutting Horse Association total $88,000. This time she will be riding
Gifted Acres. The national youth
champion cutting horse rider of 2004, Alexis Wilson, 17, of Albury, will
compete on Built Like a Roc. Dru O’Keefe, 19,
of Shepparton, riding Catmandee, will be another promising young
competitor in the inaugural event. She has won many youth titles. The "Ladies
Cutting" event on April 7 will be one of four cattle cutting events
for men and women riders at the show. Between 25 and 30
riders will compete in each of the three open events. Southern Cross
Cutting Club Inc, an affiliate of the National Cutting Horse Association
of Australia, will conduct the show at Moss Vale Showground, in the
Southern Highlands, on April 7 and 8, 2009. In the feature
cutting event for women only, women and girls will compete with each
other under the rules of the National Cutting Horse Association. Organisers say
guaranteed prize money totalling $12,000 has attracted many competitors
from NSW, Queensland and Victoria to compete in Cutting for Cancer. Prizes will be:
open event, $4,000; ladies event, $1,000; novice, $3,000; and open
non-professional, $4,000. The committee is
staging the spectacular event to showcase and promote the sport of
cutting to the general public and raise money for charity. The
show will raise money for the McGrath Foundation to provide much needed
funds for breast cancer nurses throughout rural and regional Australia
and for educating young women to be breast aware. Following the
ladies event on the Tuesday, competitors and sponsors will attend a
cocktail party at Scottish Arms Hotel in Bowral. During the evening, an
auction will be held to raise money for the foundation. Cutting for Cancer
will be held at Moss Vale two days before the Schmidt Arena cutting
horse program to be held at the Sydney Royal Easter Show during the
Easter weekend. Southern Cross
Cutting Club conducts shows and training events at Cootamundra, Wagga
Wagga, Tumut, Cowra, Orange, Kangaroo Valley, Harden, Camden, Bribaree
