All kinds of sporting clubs around Australia are discovering “online social networking” as a free and easy way to promote themselves and communicate with their members and supporters, says sports networking pioneer Stewart Whicker of Sydney.
Stewart is the founder and chief executive of a sports social networking company called Navsports Pty Ltd, which operates a web site called Navsports.com.au.
He and his company began developing the web-based network two years ago and launched it in August 2006 for the use of all types of sporting clubs.
“It’s a new and unique venture yet it’s already becoming very popular as more sporting club members discover the enormous benefits of free networking on the internet,” he says.
Hundreds of sporting clubs in all states of Australia have already joined Navsports. They include clubs for soccer, rugby league, rugby union and Australian rules football; cricket and baseball; squash and tennis; basketball and softball; wrestling, kung fu and jiu-jitsu; and bowling, golf, archery; swimming and athletics.
Among them all are: PCW Pro Championship Wrestling Club in Keysborough, Victoria; Lithgow City Rangers Soccer Club Inc, NSW; Academy Basketball Club, Toowoomba, Queensland; Dead Centre Bowhunters Club Inc, Alice Springs, Northern Territory; Sunset Coast Archers, Wembley, Western Australia; and Paringa Archers Launceston Inc, Tasmania.
Membership and use of the Navsports network is free as its interactive web site is sponsored by advertisers such as suppliers of sporting equipment and clothing.
Stewart says, “Most amateur sporting clubs in Australia have not even discovered the benefits of online networking for their members and supporters. Many of those clubs which have joined Navsports have not yet realised the full potential of its interactive web site … but they are learning.”
Netsports gives its web pages to sports clubs and lets them post their information on them free. Information can include a club profile, contact details, a member list, an announcement, a program, notice board, newsletter or the like. It can be about the club itself, its officials, members, trophy winners, coaches, sponsors, supporters, fans, practice times, games, prize presentations, membership drives, competitions or tournaments, fundraisers, socials and other events, and so on.
So the clubs do not have to have their own web sites and can save on web design, domain registration and hosting costs.
Club members can also join Navsports and post their personal profiles and other information on the web site. They can view the latest information posted by their club and can communicate and socialise with other members of their club and members of other clubs throughout the sports network.
Clubs and members can post their videos, photos and other images on their web pages at Navsports.
Navsports also provides a directory of more than 14,000 sports clubs in
Australia, making it the largest sports networking web site in this country.
It also presents sporting news coverage.
All these features are free except there is a bandwidth charge for those clubs, not members, which choose to post videos and even this fee is to be dropped when more sponsors support the network.
